Divorce cakes are all the rage. We've all seen the tiers of fun mocking the straitlaced bride and groom toppers. Some cakes are upside down with one spouse buried underneath, while others show dueling combatants dressed as bride and groom. Shanna Moekler received a cake with a woman standing atop with a knife while blood frosting poured down each tier, leading to the sprawled groom body below.
Food trend expert Dana Mcauley says that the cakes are more novelty than trend at this point. She says that although they're pictured everywhere, few bakers are actually being asked to create the cakes.
McCauley says that the ones being bought are bought by friends wishing to cheer somebody up. They fall in the same category as divorce cards, and sending black roses to the ex. "I guess it's the old, 'if you get lemons, make lemonade' adage," says Mcauley.
