Could the Legal Trend Towards Gay Marriages Lead to Legalized Polygamy?

A conservative movement warning against gay marriages has suggested that to support it could pave the way for legalized polygamy.  This on the coattails of the removal of children from the Eldorado Texas church group has some people worried.

Gay and lesbian activists are quick to separate themselves from the polygamy argument.  They argue that this is like comparing apples and oranges. One minority group looking for legalized marriage between consenting adults is not the same as another minority group looking for legalized marriage between consenting adults.

Jonathan Turley, who teaches at George Washington Law School, says that the polygamy argument is "overplayed." He says that for polygamists it's more than just amending marriage laws, it's repealing polygamy laws.  It would require a stronger support.

Turley said that although he doesn't support polygamy, the real issue was that same sex couples would have to take a close look at their stance against polygamists. "It’s disingenuous to say that gays and lesbians should be included in marriage but then for them to exclude others.”
