Be happy is the first thing to do! Know that your children depend on your happiness! Fill out a temporary parenting plan immediatly and file it with the court. That way you know that the kids are protected from the damaging arguments ( yup about the pots and pans)-can be avoided. You should additionally look online for advice and information I know there are online parenting plan software. But also you can locate information on attorney's etc online. Don't worry you will get through it! You can also file a parenting plan prior to the divorce, keep the kids first in your mind when filling one out and remember that they will only be happy when BOTH parents are happy! I hope this helps and good luck.

Hey Torn!  I don't have kids but I have filed online.  It's pretty easy and definately cheaper if you two can get along well enough to agree on everything.  The site we used  (completecase.com)  did have the paperwork for Children  and stuff, so I'm assuming that that was as easy as the rest of it.  If you can do Turbo Tax, then you can do this.  Hope that helps!

There are web sites that will walk you thru it all, If your divorce involves children, you really should talk with an attorney, usually most of them will talk to you about your case for free the first time. They will ask you what type of assets you have, how many children, and those kind of questions. If you and your husband can agree 100% on everything, then I think it will work, if you have anything at all that you or he disputes, then I believe you will need an attorney.
Some things you might want to keep inmind when divorcing with kids...
  • child support
  • health insurance for you and the children
  • furniture so the children have a place to sleep
  • visitation days
  • someone needs to be appointed custodial parent(medical reasons and other legal reasons)
  • income tax(who claims the children, this is a really big perk most people dont think to ask for.)
  • vehicle to take children to doctor, school, other current activities they are in.
  • Residence-who leaves and will they want any house hold items, if so will it be a disruption for the children, such as pots and pans, can you still cook dinner for the children if he takes them?

This is just a few things off the top of my head. If you can work out a divorce involving children without court and lawyers, it is the BEST thing you could do for you and your kids. Unfortunatly when you think its simple, it ends up being a little bit more complicated, and a simple pot or pan can cause an issue! (I know) Best of Luck!!
