I'm Back...

Hi there,

It has been a few months but I have a new problem that has arisen.  I am in WI and in our placement agreement, we are entitled to one week of vacation with the boys per year.  However, we neglected to put in the agreement that the vacation would not be taken while school is in session.  My x wants to take our sons (15 & 14) on vacation the week after spring break.  My 15 year old is in honors classes in a block schedule high school and says he cannot miss that much school cause missing one day is like two.  I offered to let him take them during spring break (my time with them) and he said he would and will "send them home that Sunday".  Can he just fly them home alone without my permission?  Thanks.

It sounds like a good solution to me.  I've had my kids fly as an "unattended minor" many times when they were as young as 8.  Check out the airlines website to see all the checks, double checks and triple checks that they have to make sure the kids are safe.  My kids love doing it because they feel very grown up. The only complaint that they have is that the airline employees "hover around them and won't leave the alone for a minute".  Your babies will be fine:)

Most airlines allow kids age 5 and up to fly alone, provided it is a non stop flight  - they are cared for by the fight personnel.

By age 15 most airlines don't even demand attendant accompaniment...some go as low as 8 and can be sent on flights that have connections. You'd have to check with the airline he is using to find out their exact guidelines.

So yes, long story short, he can send them home on the airplane by themselves.

My kids fly to visit out of state relatives all the time, and they have a blast doing it. They feel so "grown up". The flight personnel still keep an eye on them even if they are over the unaccompanied minor age for supervision.

They will be fine mom =)
