settlement stuff

Hi, I am getting a separation in MI. Heres the thing..I am in school and will be about 30 grand in dept by the end of grad school. Has anyone worked that into their settlement? If so how? Same with spousal support. Is there a limit how long you can receive it? Can I give up spousal support if he will foot the college bill?

thanks,

shel

Not sure about MI, but in CA alimony is paid for half the length of the marriage when it's a marriage of 10 years or more.  Even though I have been a stay at home mom for 12 years, alimony was based on me earning minimum wage as I am expected to work. You may want to consider if financial aid will be impacted by support received (if any). You may also want to look into whether you may owe him anything due to his paying for your advanced degree, therefore increasing your earning potential. A lot depends on how much each of you earn (or could earn). Good luck!
