Should I fire my divorce attorney? And how?

I was served before Christmas for divorce. My soon to be ex husband and I are under temporary order. We are living in the same house with our kids until the divorce is final. This arrangement is affecting my mental health in a bad way. I am getting professional help...but I can't take it anymore! My problem is I've repeatedly asked my attorney to make arrangements so that I can move out without risking losing custody of my 2 kids. My attorney is supposed to be appointing a guardian to represent my kids in the custody battle. He is supposed to be lifting the temporary order so I can move out. Basically, I don't feel like he is protecting my legal interests in this case. Can I fire my attorney & get my $5000 retainer back? And how do I do it? I've never been divorced before...I'm clueless.

Others have recommended I stay in the house too.  But I can't afford to keep this house at $2000 a month.  He is trying to claim I am an unfit mother.  So my attorney has to get a guardian to represent my kids.  I was a stay at home Mom for years & work part time now so I can still be home.  I made a few bad choices after I got served for divorce that are reflecting poorly on my custody rights.  Basically, I had to be hospitalized for a nervous breakdown.  I'm getting better though...Thank God!

another poster, JAM, has a similar experience (booting the lawyer) and posted about it here:  http://www.divorce360.com/community/advice/view/2429/what-should-i-expect-changing-lawyers-in-the-midst-of-a-divorce.aspx

there seems to be a few different things going on here.  i can totally understand not wanting to stay in the same house with him, but why can't he move out instead?  you're the mom, shouldn't he be the one that leaves?  why are the kids being represented by a guardian exactly?  i don't understand that part.
